After Last year successful the tiger census in India,
then ministry of the forests and environment want the census of
Indian Elephants. Many beneficial of
the census like, we see the how many tigers are living in the India forest, how
to save this royal animal, progress or loss number of the animal, how to stop
its poaching and see the problem of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in
India. So census is very beneficial for the conservation and stops the poaching
of Bengal tigers and Indian Elephants. Thus,
now, Indian forests and environment department is starting census of
Indian Elephants in the 2
nd and 3
rd week of the May, 2012.
Generally, all censuses in India are being the conducted in
the five years. Last census of the elephant was conducted in the 2007 in the
state.

The central government recently the sent a ordered
(circular) to all states to the conducts elephant census, both outside of the
national parks and wildlife sanctuaries and inside Parks and Sanctuaries to
known population of Indian elephants in the whole country. No doubt,
Indian Elephants population has grown
the beyond imagination.
India
is a whole country; there have more than one hundred national parks and above
400 wildlife sanctuaries. According to a report, there are about of the 50,000
to 70,000 elephants in state’s wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. But
Kaziranga National Park
is most famous habitat for Indian elephants.
Kaziranga National Park is located on the bank of
the Bharmputra rive in Assam
state of India.
Kaziranga National Park is selected in the World
Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In the meeting of the Conservator of the Forests and the
Deputy Conservator of the Forests was held the before a few days to explain
theme dos and the dont’s of propose census.

Ajay Mishra, Chief Elephant Project of Karnataka, Chief
Conservator of the Forests, told Express that census will be the conducted in 3
days with assistance of the official of forest department of the Tamil Nadu and
the Kerala in the Mysore Elephant Reserve in the south Karnataka and Goa and
the Maharashtra in the north Karnataka.
The idea of the conducting joint census is to the prevent
duplication of the numbers as elephants the cross boundaries in the search of
foliage and the fodder. Suitable days for all states will be worked out and census
will be the conducted the simultaneously in entire the south India, he said.
Census is followed by the three methods, Mishra said.
In the first methods area is selected and divided into the different parts or
blocks of 5 square kilometers each. Second method is followed to the Line Transportation
Dung Count in which decomposition of the dung is studied to the ascertain
number of the elephants. 3rd method is waterhole the count in which
census team will obtain the pictures of group. It will give the total picture
of number of the adults, calf, juveniles, pachyderms and female and male, he
said.
